用except for
如果用except，必须是前后所谈的是可并列的同类事物；besides的用法与except同，但表意时包括其后的事物；but for是“要不是……就”的意思，一般用于引导虚拟从句。except for意思与except同，但不要求前后是可并列的内容。
本句中前面是说街道冷清，后面是说警察，二者不能并列，只能用except for。
如果句子改成“At late night there were no people on the street ( )two or three policemen ”,就应该用except了。
