Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental illness with a high prevalence and a high suicidal risk. Its features include a long period of depressed mood and mood disturbance, and it is closely related to cognitive disorder. Various reports have already showed that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) along with anti-depressants are believed to be more effective than CBT alone. This essay briefly introduced CBT as a treatment of MDD, which included the description of the CBT procedures, the features of CBT and how these features are suitable for treatment and management of MDD. A comparative analysis to compare CBT with other forms of treatment as well as future prospects on CBT based on the analysis were also made.
